Enchanting waters – The Lakes of north India (part 2)

PANGONG

After the Bollywood hit “3 idiots”, Pangong Lake or Pangong Tso has emerged as one of the most visited tourist places in Ladakh.

This serene salt water lake is also situated in the Changthang plateau at an altitude of 4350 metres. Only 40% of the 134 km long lake is in India remaining part is in Tibet. It is a visual delight to view different shades of blue colour of this lake amidst picturesque landscape.

Despite being saline water Pangong lake freezes completely in winter. Walking on the frozen lake is altogether a different experience. A drive of 160 km from Leh to this lake crossing Changla pass is also an adventure in itself.

You can visit Pangong Lake all the year round, but the best time to visit is June to September. There are lots of options like home stays and tents available for stay in both Lukung and Spangmik villages along the shore of the lake. The more adventurous can move further along the lake to Man or Merak villages. A few home stays are available during extreme winters also.
